Three state parks sit within 40 miles of Las Vegas, and they could not be more different. Valley of Fire is 40,000 acres of red sandstone with petroglyphs more than 2,000 years old. Spring Mountain Ranch is a green ranch under the Red Rock cliffs that Howard Hughes once owned. Ice Age Fossils, on the northern edge of the valley, is where the Big Dig of 1962 went looking for mammoths. Fall is the season for all three: many of Valley of Fire’s trails reopened on October 1 after the summer heat closure. This is the outdoor half of the day. The eating half is at the end: one table on the way back from each park.
We run State Park Near Me, a directory of every state park in the country, and we are a guest here. Top of Las Vegas asked for the parks. They supplied the restaurants.
The day, in order
Start with Valley of Fire, which opens at sunrise and is the farthest of the three. The day of the week matters for which way you drive in. Through the end of 2026, the West Entrance is closed Monday through Thursday while the state builds a new entrance lane and fee booth. On those days, enter from the East Entrance by State Route 169 or 167. Friday through Sunday the West Entrance is open. Stop at the Visitor Center first, open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Do not plan on a rideshare: the park warns that visitors who take Uber or Lyft in can be stranded without a ride back. Ice Age Fossils, at 8660 North Decatur Boulevard, fits on the way home if it is Wednesday through Sunday and you arrive before 4:30.
Valley of Fire

Bright red Aztec sandstone set in gray and tan limestone, with petrified trees and rock art. From May 15 to September 30 the state closes many of its trails, including White Domes Loop, the Fire Wave and Seven Wonders loop, Pastel and Pink Canyons, Pinnacles Loop and Natural Arch, because of the medical calls, rescues and deaths that came with the heat. Those trails are open again now. The park says its trails often feel longer than listed, so carry more water than the map suggests. Shaded picnic areas with restrooms are at Atlatl Rock, Seven Sisters, the Cabins, Mouse’s Tank trailhead and White Domes. Day use needs no reservation. The park is open sunrise to sunset.
Spring Mountain Ranch

The opposite direction, west on Highway 159 beside Red Rock Canyon. It was a working ranch and then a retreat for a string of owners, among them the actress Vera Krupp and Howard Hughes. The 1860s blacksmith shop and the Sandstone Cabin are among the oldest buildings in Nevada, and the ranch house is open for a self-guided tour. Picnic tables sit under trees the park says are more than 400 years old. In October the park is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from November through February it closes at 4:30. It will be closed entirely from November 2 to 8 for maintenance and reopens November 9. Trails close an hour before the gates. Stage one fire restrictions are in force at Nevada state parks, so a fire is allowed only in a provided grill or fire ring.
Ice Age Fossils

A 315-acre stretch of the upper Las Vegas Wash where Columbian mammoths, American lions, camels, dire wolves and ground sloths once lived. The Big Dig of 1962 and 1963 trenched through it, and the trenches are still there. The Megafauna Trail is 0.3 miles of life-size sculptures behind the visitor center, the easy one for children. After damage from Tropical Storm Rachel, parts of the Las Vegas Wash and Big Dig trails are closed until further notice; staff hand out the open routes at check-in. The visitor center has exhibits, restrooms and drinking water. No camping and no drones.
